Mission
We are committed to:
- Providing exemplary multidisciplinary care to critically ill adults and their families;
- Respecting the human dignity of all patients and their families, recognizing their unique values and beliefs;
- Designing and implementing systems to improve care delivery to the critically ill outside of the Critical Care Units.
- Exploring ways to prevent the development of critical illness including primary prevention
- Supporting superior educational opportunities in critical care;
- Supporting, conducting and applying multidisciplinary clinical, applied and outcomes research to provide the best clinical care with optimal resource utilization.
- Providing an academic environment for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education within the Critical Care Program and Division of Critical Care Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Alberta. The Critical Care Program provides postgraduate training of intensive care, medical, surgical, anaesthetic and emergency medicine residents and is recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for Advanced Residency Training in Critical Care Medicine.
Goals
To provide high quality, safe, cost effective care to the critically ill patient by:
- Providing families and patients with an open and honest assessment of the patient's condition;
- Efficiently utilizing diagnostic and therapeutic modalities;
- Assisting the patient return to an optimal state of health and providing compassion/comfort when death is inevitable; and,
- By promoting efficient communication between caregivers involved with critically ill patients.
- To be recognized as the premier academic critical care program in Western Canada and one of the best nationally.
